Really Evil Fairies

Are evil fairies really gothic, or ugly with warts, wearing strange black fairy costumes? Evil and fairies have fascinated humans for millennium, it seems. And mortals do have many a fascinating tale. But not all are exactly accurate. I am a fairy, and this is my version. With the inside scoop on the wicked and famous.Ophelia Fey
Evil fairies seem to hold a peculiar fascination for mortals. Humans, I have noticed, have woven many legends and myths around them, their foul "familiars," their vile herbs and potions and such. But sometimes you have mistaken evil fae folk for other mythical creatures. For instance, many so-called witches, as you may know, are not evil. There are many creatures who dwell in the world of Faerie. Faerie is the general name given to our realm, our kingdom; and is also sometimes used for the inhabitants. Faerie, therefore, is both a land and a race. Within Faerie are many types. And there are those that are evil. Very evil. Humans have given evil fairies many other names throughout your legends and myths. You have, of course, the standard witches, banshees, sorceresses, hags, the Unseelie Court, changelings. And there are also the jezinkas, evil peris or deevs, and so forth. And somewhere in there mortals have lumped together gothic fairies, who are altogether different types and not always evil fairies. It has been useful for humans to categorize, I’m sure. However, the reality of the Kingdom of Faerie is quite different. All fairies have, and live in, energy frequencies. Energy bands. Just like with your radio frequencies, there is a very wide range. And evil fairies dwell in the worst of the worst. Many dwell in what you would call their own hell. Fire having nothing to do with it. You don’t want to go there. I know, because I have. Your hideous human tales of horror pale in comparison. Let me tell you about a few evil fairies that I, myself, know. And you too, will be familiar with many. But let me be perfectly clear. I am summarizing your mortal tales here, although they are mixed in with and based upon a Something from the Unseen realms. They are not as they seem, though. And the names in your tales are names that humans have given. I shall use them here for convenience, but we do not use the same names in Faerie. Although many of yours come quite close. Many of your characters do parallel our fae, since they were inspired. And also, many of our fae have come to mimic your tales. Sometimes it is difficult to know which came first -- the chicken or the egg. Sometimes it all seems like just a fantasy... But let us try to reconstruct a few.
Morgan Le Fay – Ah yes. Beautiful Morgan. We’ll start with her since she is one of the borderline evil fairies and has indeed gotten a bad rap, as you say. Morgan is definitely a very powerful fairy although half human, but is not a witch in the way mortals imagine. She had the misfortune of mixing with mankind during the days before and after Arthur, your historical Britain warlord. Mixing, shall we say, in more ways than one. And when fairies mix with men, some degree of evil usually results. In actuality, Morgan was trying in her own way to assist, moving to and fro from the land of Avalon. As a talented enchantress and healer, Morgan knew full well that fae folk really are not supposed to interfere with the free will of mankind. Unless asked, of course. And then we must be very careful about what we meddle in. Well Morgan, with her typical great enthusiasm, slightly overdid it and worked magic where she should not have. She always has had a tendency towards exasperation. And jealousy. Sometimes it is best to allow humans to sink their own ships, so to speak. Which you often do quite well without the assistance of fairies, evil or not. There are many myths about Morgan most of them quite wrong. But entertaining, nonetheless.
Sleeping Beauty’s Evil Fairy --

Don’t even get me started. She has been known as Carabosse, Malevola, or Maleficent by you. Although her name in Faerie is quite different. As with all fae names, it is long and unpronounceable to humans. I would never ever release it to you, because to do so would connect you to her energy, which you would never survive. (Sleeping Beauty, also known as Rosebud or Aurora, barely did, and that was only because she had other fairies who had been able to somewhat previously protect her). Let me just say, though, that it does contain the phrase “Mal.” The name Malefia is close enough. Malefia is haughty and wrathful and delights in turning innocent creatures into something quite nasty. She dwells so deep in the frequency of evil that there is very little chance that you would ever come upon her. That is mostly the stuff of stories. However, if you ever allow your mind and heart to be filled with a certain level of intense hate, you open yourself wide to her energy. She could then very well detect you. She grows thorns with the sharpest barbs and fashions them into ropes, among other things. Disney’s portrayal of her wall of thorns was quite correct. Once she has hooked you with one of her barbs, it is very difficult indeed to get rid of her. So guard yourself well. Make sure you always go to sleep with love and peace in your heart. This is your best protection against all evil fairies.
Baba Yaga -- What can I say. Evil yes, but also a bit comical. I mean, you want to just roll your eyes at her. Really gets into drama. Baba Yaga is actually a wise woman and is sometimes sought after for her wisdom and healing powers. But she is totally irrational, as are most witches or evil fairies. Who, after all, would live in a moving hut that can run around on chicken legs. I mean really. Flying on a broomstick is old-fashioned enough. And not necessary. Real fairies do not need props such as broomsticks to fly, but many use such things just to show off. And really, the only ones who are impressed are humans, especially children. Fae folk know better. Nevertheless, she can be vicious so we do stay away from her. In the land of Faerie there are also forests, and she lives in a very dark and deep woods. Children should be especially careful, as she has been known to kidnap and even try to eat them, should they manage to wander away from mortal reality into the land of Faerie. I understand most do manage to get away. You may know that she has a fence around her yard made of bones and skulls. And some of them are human. Yes, it is gross, but you need to know. Baba Yaga is no one to mess with.
Absinthia -- Sometimes called Artemisia. You are most familiar with her as Absinthe, or the Green Fairy. A true free spirit who loves all that is unusual. Also very seductive. She is a master chemist who specializes in the eery green elixir named after her. Deep in the center of her realm is a great garden of artemisia absinthium. Her special herb. Her lure. You have known it by the name of Wormwood. Powerful indeed. So powerful that your lore has also named many an evil character after it. In the mortal world, absinthe, as you may know, is a highly potent alcoholic beverage becoming increasingly popular. Many a recipe abounds. I have seen them myself written out within your Web. But none compare to the brew of the green fairy Absinthia. Once under its spell, it is very difficult to awaken. She will capture your soul and imagination. Beware.
The Gingerbread Witch -- She likes to call herself Grossmutter Gunda -- Grandmother Gunda. You refer to her as a witch. But she is an evil fae pretending to be a kindly grandmother who loves desserts. Building her entire house of gingerbread and sweets, as you know. But in truth, her favorite desserts are not made of sugar, if you know what I mean. Young Hansel and Gretel did mistakenly wander out of the human realm into another dimension. The parallel dimension of Faerie. This is very easy to do if not paying attention while walking in certain woods. Yes, indeed. There are those places on earth where the Veil is very thin and mortals can get lost. As with most evil fairies, the lure, the trap, is carefully set. In this case a delightful gingerbread house. And the young or young at heart, unfortunately, are the most vulnerable. However, evil fairies of this level are not that smart and can be outwitted. Greed gets to them almost every time. You just have to know their weak spot. Better yet, don’t wander away from your own world.
The Apple Witch in Snow White -- Her real name was Lady LaPomme in the French courts, who then became queen or a very small province and so was Queen LaPomme. Lady LaPomme became fascinated with the black arts and was said to have visited and studied under Apate, goddess of Deceit. It is no coincidence that this evil fae in your story of Snow White decided to use an apple as a ploy. La Pomme means Apple in French. It is both sweet and sour, and has been used in the land of Faerie for both good and evil. Easy to dress up or down, you might say. Some of your tales show this wicked queen falling off a cliff in the end. But that wasn’t her end. Quite the contrary. Remember, those who know magic also know when, where, and how to pass through the Veil. Back into the realm of Faerie. Untouchable by mortals. Her story is not yet ended. Not by any means.
Lorelei -- This stunning water fairy is one of the Rhinemaidens of old, who still lives in the waters and rocks of the Rhine River where it meets the North Sea. But you would have to know where to look. And how to look. Most importantly, how to hear her. Her story is sad. Who can judge if she is truly one of the evil fairies. It was she who lured many an unsuspecting sailor to his doom with her haunting songs and other-worldly voice. Much like the evil fairies called Sirens, only Lorelei is far more fetching. She is thought to be evil for doing this, but in truth was bewitched and also terribly lonely. More than anything, she longed for a mate. Those in Faerie knew of her spell and would not go near her; wouldn’t touch her with a ten foot wand. So she sang on the cliffs and rocks, trying to attract a sailor. But alas, they could only get so close, and then their ships and boats would crash into the wild waves and jagged rocks, leaving them dead when she finally reached them. Now her voice has weakened from sorrow, and her story is tossed in the wind, much forgotten and lost. Is she then evil? So if you perchance know of a brave suitor willing to try breaking her spell in return for the love of an extraordinarily beautiful fairy, then have them go to the rocky cliffs near St. Goarshausen, Germany. They may hear the voice of Lorelei. And if they love her strongly enough, may free her.
The Snow Queen -- Which one? Yes, actually, there are several snow queens throughout several provinces within Faerie. And they are not all evil fairies by any means. Your traditional story of the Snow Queen who kidnaps the young boy Kay (or Kaj) until he is rescued by his friend Gerda. The Snow Queen is indeed based on a wicked fairy witch from far away, whose name would be mostly closely translated into human language as Queen Snjoa (your Icelandic language). Splinters of ice were only one of her magic weapons. She also had a crystal ice ball to snoop into others’ lives. As with the witch in Narnia, she had cast a spell on all of the animals in her domain as well. Truly terrible. However, she has since been stripped of most of her power and now has only enough to wreak a bit of havoc among those unfortunate animals who may get lost on her mountain. She hardly has enough magic left to keep up her frosty palace, and no one will help her, so it is quite a mess. Muddy slush and all drifted over. Quite lonely is she. No real friends for no one trusts her, especially not other evil fairies. Everyone has now given her the cold shoulder.
Circe -- What can I say. Here I must bite my tongue. Truly one of the evil fairies. Thinks she’s hot stuff and says her father was the sun king, Helios. Humans referred to him as a god, but he was really just a lesser king. Powerful though. And her mother, get this, was an Oceanid – a water fairy. (That’s why Circe always wants to live by the sea). What a mix -- parents of fire and water. Must have been a real pair. No wonder Circe was so steamy. And screwed up. In your story she turns everyone in poor Odysseus’ crew into pigs or other filthy animals. She also specializes in brewing all sorts of drugs. Some are age defying, so she never looks old. Circe actually tutored young Absinthia and taught her many spells and potions of the evil fairies. They remain friends still. So stay away from the island of Αἰαία (between Italy and Greece, although in a slightly different dimension). That is where she’s lived for thousands of years. Anyway, it would be hard for you to deliberately find. Circe would have to find you. And if she wants to, she will. Ships don’t only disappear in the Bermuda Triangle…
Rapunzel’s Dame Gothel -- This is where you say, what a witch. Talk about rigid, unbending and selfish. I mean, just because Rapunzel’s father was caught picking a plant from a garden, the parents are forced to give up their child to a fae, forever? How cruel is that? At least in your story. In far olden times giving up children was (once in a blue moon) indeed used as payment for crossing the line with evil fairies. Sometimes the parents were not even forewarned. The child just went missing. Perhaps they were in Faerie, or perhaps locked in an enchanted tower as was Rapunzel by Dame Gothel. Or so the story goes. If it hadn’t been for the sweet and soothing voice of Rapunzel, and her long silken hair which the witch combed for hours to calm her nerves, who knows what other evil she may have done. Including meddling in the matters of mortals. When Rapunzel ran off with her prince, Dame Gothel was so bereft, she tore out her own hair, never to grow back again. She was done with hair. Bald is now beautiful. To her. There are gazillions of strange stories about evil fairies in the land of Faerie. Perhaps I will tell more at a later time. For now, just know that you are safe from evil fairies if your own energy is strong and loving. (But that is an entirely separate topic).
