Fairy Holidays

by Kara

Do fairies celebrate human holidays? And if so, how do they celebrate?

Ophelia Fey says -- Hello Kara. Very good question. Fairies love to celebrate and have festivals and parties, so we find every excuse that we can. And those of us who work with humans and who pass through the Veil into your dimension do enjoy your holidays. Many of yours, as you know, are based around religious traditions of all kinds. Fairies, not being human, do not exactly follow your religions, which were created to help you. However, we do understand the purpose of them, and many of us do honor what they represent to you.

Much of what we celebrate, then, depends on what part of the world we serve in. And how familiar with mortal culture we are. Fairies who live in India or China or Africa, for instance, would follow different holidays than those who live in the forests of Britain.

Fairies who are familiar with the human communities around them would see you getting ready for your holidays -- all the hustle and bustle and decorating and planning. And we of course would feel the excitement, being that fae folk are feelers. We would see the lights in the streets, the music, the costumes, the parades, the "floats" as some of you call them. If we visit homes, we would see the decorations there and perhaps overhear the stories and songs. And since fae folk also like to mimic what we like, we may very well get in a festive mood ourselves and join in the fun.

We may flit around the fires and lights (and we may add a little light of our own -- so look for us). If someone is wearing a fabulous costume, especially a hat, small fairies might like to tuck themselves into it and be carried along to watch. Certain fairies just love the festival of the nine divine nights in India. And others love Mardi Gras. Or the Mwakakogwa Festival in Africa. And certain fairies just love the Chinese New Year. And naturally Halloween. We may hide in your pumpkin and offer a little light. We definitely like to be in parades and may add a little sparkle. Anyone who tosses candies into the crowds during a parade -- well, wouldn't we just love to catch one too. And don't we simply adore fireworks. You can count on fire fairies be present at almost any fireworks display anywhere in the world.

There are many fae folk (and I don't mean Santa's elves -- that is a whole other topic) who really enjoy Christmas. Especially since it is found in so many places around the earth. We don't have much interest in all the commercial side of it like humans do. We feel the deeper Spirit of Christmas. But it is fun to see the decorations and lights, and may nestle deep in your Christmas tree and give a special twinkle.

When we celebrate the holidays, we do have our own feasts. But if you perchance leave a little food out in your home, we may borrow a morsel or two to add some authentic human holiday cuisine to our own. We will also have our own dances and singing, sometimes right alongside yours, sometimes in our own areas.

As for fairy holidays, that is entirely another matter. We, ourselves, celebrate the high points in our own history and realm. And also follow the cycles of nature: the Soltices, the Equinoxes, the full moons and new moons, etc. The turning of the seasons and the months, in other words. There are those of you on earth who do somewhat the same thing, and so we may also participate in your festivities too.

So you may expect some unexpected visitors (us) during your holidays. And don't be surprised if you seem to be missing a bit of food here and there. No need to leave out anything in particular for us. We just snatch a little of this and a little of that, as it suits our fancy.

Holiday (Christmas) quest
by: Anonymous

You might know what Christmas is. Therefore, do you work with God and angels?

[Ophelia Fey says] - Yes, I definitely do know what Christmas is, as do many nature spirits. And yes, we do work with God, as we are part of creation also. (The word "God," as you may know, may be a slightly different word in other traditions and cultures in your world, but you get the idea I'm sure). I have actually written a couple of Ask A Fairy answers about this topic, so you may want to read them as well.

Valentine's Day
by: Anonymous

Hey Ophelia, I was going to ask you if fairies celebrate Valentine's Day?

[Ophelia Fey says] -- Those of us who are near to the customs of mortals do love to celebrate Valentine's Day. This is one of your traditions, so we do not have it in Faerie. (Except for those of us who have brought it there from you). We love anything chocolate of course, and it seems there is lots of it around on this day. Plus flowers and candles and presents sometimes. And last but not least... Love!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Ophelia. Fairy blessings to you and everyone who believes.

[Ophelia Fey says] -- Thank you Heather! And may you have a very special holiday and New Year, with many fairy friends!

Halloween
by: Heather

Happy Halloween Ophelia!

[Ophelia says] -- Thank you very much, and to you too! May you eat loads of sweets and never get sick or get cavities. (One advantage of having a fairy form).

I have noticed that quite a few people dressed as various types of fae this year. Including with fairy makeup. I hope my pages came in handy for a few of you. Perhaps I will also have to do a page about fairy costumes sometime.
