Fairy Makeup Looks
by Rachel
We have a play about fairies and I'm in charge of makeup. I just wanted to know some easy techniques to make the actors look like fairies.
Ophelia Fey says -- Rachel, first off, I apologize for the delay in answering you. The delay is because I have been very busy -- busy making a special web page just for you, with some ideas of easy makeup. The page will be called, in fact, Easy Fairy Makeup. (I'm including a sneak peek picture here). When it is finished, I will post a little notice in the What's New section. Probably tomorrow. I have gotten a couple of other requests, actually, for makeup ideas. So this will help other readers too.
Keep in mind the types of fairies you will be having in your play. Are they woodland or flower fairies, for instance? That will make a difference with the color and design. Woodland fairies tend to deck themselves out in greens and earth tons, lots of leafy patterns, with a smattering of color to match the wildflowers that grow nearby.
And they usually have lots of growth in their hair -- like me -- and I mean growth IN our hair. My hair sprouts sprouts, you see. And the sprouts bloom. But back to makeup -- if they're flower fairies, then do lots of bright color.
For human skin, it is important to first clean your skin very well, then apply a makeup primer, concealer, and foundation to make the makeup stay on better. Fairies don't have that problem. If we want it to stay, it stays. And I suggest you get lots of richly colored eyeliner pencils, and eyeshadows too. You can also get opaque lipstick in the most marvelous colors. You wouldn't believe how we do our lips sometimes. Oh, the colors. And accents like flower bud tattoos, and so forth. Occasionally a spider. But you probably wouldn't want to do that.
And don't forget sparkle. As in fairy dust. Since you may have difficulty getting the real thing, just go to your local cosmetic store and get anything shimmery and sparkly that you can. You will see what I mean in the examples I make on the web site. And remember the body jewels!
One of the easiest things to do is use stencils. Of flowers, butterflies, leaves, etc. Or a bird. And fill them in, like coloring, with your eyeliners and eyeshadows and even face paints. If you're good at freehand drawing, do vines coming down the temples and cheeks. We impress real vines into our skin, but you may not know how to do that.
You could make a couple patterns in advance to look at, and then do all the fairies basically the same way -- but in slightly different colors. And maybe a unique accent on each one, so they're a little different. That way you won't have to come up with a lot of different designs. And perhaps the ideas I give on the page will work for you.
Please do take pictures of your fairy makeup when it's done, and submit it. I'd love to see it! And so would our other readers!
