Very Fairy Makeup
Fairy makeup is easy with the right supplies and techniquesDoing makeup is exceedingly popular in the Kingdom of Faerie, just as it is in the mortal realm. Of course the way we do it is quite different (with wands and so forth) than the way you do. But it seems we share many of the same ideas. Let me give you a few little very fairy hints here, and perhaps they’ll be of use to you. Ophelia Fey
The first step to any makeup (or costume) is inspiration. Which is all around us. And around you too. Favorite fairy makeup themes include not just butterflies, bats and bugs. But also other winged creatures such as dragons and mythical birds, even fire. In fact, creatures from myths and legends lend us loads of ideas. Then there are flowers (black roses are spectacular), foliage of all sorts, berries and vines. Many of our species, of course, you do not have in your dimension. But you get the idea. Naturally, fairies who live in or near the sea prefer fish and seashell motifs. Then there are the sun, moon and stars set. Spiders and serpents are really “in” among a certain group. Flames are the favorite with fire fairies of course (they really have a challenge making makeup last, so have developed specialized procedures that I won’t go into here since humans could never withstand them). Perhaps it's impossible for mortals to create makeup just like fairies do. But we have some excellent easy fairy makeup ideas for you. Make sure you read all about it. Including if you are a fairy -- we have many secret tips for you.
Fairies often do their own makeup. Yes, we even like to have parties. But for special occasions or for complicated concepts, we seek out an artist who specializes in fairy makeup. Take a look at some of the samples below. Of course, if you’re a mortal you may have to modify them. And frankly, I’m not sure how you’d accomplish some of it, like embedding a glittered tarantula into your cheek. I suppose you could paint it on, but it’s just not quite the same. That’s where a wand would come in handy. Now let's take a look at some design ideas. I've recruited some fairies that have skin tones closer to those of humans. It would be more difficult to get a sense of design for mortals, with a bright orange or purple fairy.

This garden fairy wears a simple design of petals, leaves and vines impressed into her cheeks, plus the ever-popular dots under and over the eyes. Colors are spring and chosen to match her garden foliage garments. A basic pink quartz tipped willow wand was used to impress the petals. Delicate and not overdone.

The butterfly look is quite common, and fairies change out the colors and types of butterflies with the seasons. Although they are not often used during the winter. Unless sprinkled with plenty of frost, or simply painted on. And of course it's difficult to get a real butterfly to volunteer under such circumstances. Butterfly designs are almost always accompanied by plenty of jewels. Dots are also usually added. In this sample you have both real butterfly wings, and painted enhancements around the eyes.

Ear enhancements are excellent for those with pointed ears. If you don’t have them, perhaps a costume shop has a kit. This elf did have ear vines, although they weren’t glittered. Crushed emerald dust was therefore sprayed on. And naturally emerald jewels (from North Carolina in the U.S. – great mines there, even human tourists are invited to try mining for your own emeralds. And it doesn’t matter to us, since you’d never find the fairy mines anyway). The little leaf vine designs were painted on from juice of the Ipomoea.
Autumn is a favorite time for fairy makeup. The colors are glorious, needless to say. Here we have vivid sumac leaves on the forehead with a centered blood opal (in this case from natural opals, no blood was used). The point of each sumac leaf additionally has a garnet jewel. Amber and garnet studs enhance the eyebrows, with the inner edge of each brow having a primary stud of ruby. An amber stud has also been imbedded above the upper lip. Glitter from various crystals, plus gold, has been painted in a scroll work design down the left temple and cheek, with a smaller design by the right eye for balance. Also across the collarbone. A generous amount of glitter was also applied to the eyelids. Moon drops hang from the ears. A special moon glint has been added to the iris of the eye. Looks great for the autumn equinox festivals.

The gothic fairy makeup look is also popular, with sparkling black hole dust, as well as obsidian and crushed crystal glitter. An tarantula frosted with glitter also, and has been imbedded on the cheek. The arachnid was honored to be chosen and looked forward to her decorative duties. (It will, of course, be returned to its natural state when finished). Do you see the spatterings of star dust around the eyes? Spattered on with the special beryl wand mentioned above. Effective, no? The blue jewels attached to the inner eyebrows are coalesced waters from the lake of Avalon, (which is not in your dimension).

Fairy makeup around the mouth and chin areas is frequently seen, especially at birthday parties, christenings, weddings, and even out on a fancy shopping spree. The secret is to match with your skin tone. Makeup around this area tends to be subtle rather than on the wild side. Unless the fairy skin is already a rather vivid color, such as a brighter blue or purple.

This fairy princess has chosen blue for the latest fest. Resplendent not only with an abundance of sapphires, special flowers have been sprouted from her ear tips for the occasion to match the color scheme, and well as glimmers in her wings. Extra glimmer was also added to the real diamonds of the necklace. The blue chamrosh bird (blue is rather rare) has been painted down the left cheek and chin area. The feather motif is also repeated around the eye. The right eye (not seen in the photo) repeats the same design; the right side does not have a bird, however. (That would have been a bit excessive for this princess’s taste).
