Fantastical Fairy Names

Fairy names, you know, are nothing short of fantastical. Even humans would think so. (Can you guess this fairy's name?) Of course, humans will never know our real names. We would never dream of telling it to a mortal – That would be like taking our life into our hands. You see, our names, as with all mystical creatures, are the key to our power and very identity. If our name was to get into the wrong hands, well… that would be devastating indeed. Our power and magic could be stolen. We would become weak and limp. Possibly unable to fly, for those of us who fly. Unable to find our way home. And if we did not get our power back soon, we would die. Horrors. I cannot bear to even think about it. So obviously, my name of Ophelia Fey, is what I say to mortals.
Besides, humans would not even be able to pronounce our names. They are in the language of Faerie, after all. Some of the sounds you would not hear – they are on a frequency your ears cannot access. Dogs and other animals, however, often can. Fairy names are related to the many types of fairies there are. For instance, there are earth, air, fire and water fairies…the elements. (Thus types of fairies are sometimes known as elementals). Earth fairies may be named after crystals, gems, flowers, plants. Humans have your scientific names for these.
Our names are always in a string of words very carefully combined together, to bring us the ultimate power. Like my friend -- Sarina Salina Sabrina Soleil.
A name example may be Heliodor, a beryl-like crystal formation with pyramid structures before polished. To fairies, this is a very powerful crystal, and influences our knowledge and intuition. A fairy who grows and takes care of Heliodor is special indeed, and would have a fantastical name that would include the crystal. His or her fairy dust would also be at least partly made of powderized Heliodor. And if sprinkled on you, particularly on the top of your head, would cause you to become more wise, intelligent, and intuitive. But, of course, you’d have to know how to attract such a fairy in the first place.
And then there is Oleander. One of your most poisonous plants (to mortals). Lovely and fragrant blossoms, to be sure, but potentially deadly. Also deadly to certain types of fae folk. And so fairies who make magical potions often seek out oleander. And may also use the word in their fairy names. In combination with other name parts, the word “oleander” can be so potent that even pronouncing the fairy’s name can be deadly to some. This is a favorite trick of the dark fairies… using a potent word in their names. In that case, they feel free to give out their real fairy names, because when uttered by the unsuspecting, can cause them to fall unconscious or even die. I do not recommend that you play around with using the name of Oleander. You may just cause a spell to fall upon an innocent person. Or not innocent person.I’m sure you must get the idea. Real fairy names often come from nature. Here are some very popular names that are often used, when we give our names to humans (not our real fairy names, of course – but names we like to call ourselves around others).
