The Night Fairy Bat

The night fairy bat is dark and hidden, coming out only after dusk. Dark meaning, dark in color. Although some have been known to be dark in deed as well. It is a very special fairy who flies with the bats. You may wonder why they do.Ophelia Fey, Fairy Bats, you see, are intelligent. They also live in colonies and are, you might say, family oriented. Sometimes quite huge with thousands of members. They all hang together. Bat fairies find this quite cozy. And they even share food with each other should someone not get any on a given night. (Although the way in which they share may seem quite disgusting to you – by spitting it up and into each others’ mouths. Fairies, though, do not share in this custom). Bats, too are furry and warm, with big eyes and often big ears. So certain fairies find them quite endearing.

And these fairies have taken on many of their characteristic, almost to seem bat-like themselves. They may have ears that are similar, and their hair may resemble bat fur. And those who fly with the vampire bat will have developed quite awesome teeth. And then, of course, there are the wings. Bat leather (as we call it) is soft yet tough. They are shaped perfectly for flying, and many fairies prefer this simple style. On special occasions and during festivals (which many do attend) they have been known to add a little sparkle and glitz to them. And they like to wrap their wings around themselves, like bats do. Mortals may think of them as spooky or scary, however, but not these types of fairies. Thus they are often known as the fairy-bat, or sometimes bat fairy. The Night Fairy Bat is most common since most bats do come out at night. They follow the ways of the bat. But when the moon is full, they will especially become active.

Mortals, it seems, categorize the bat and bat fairy under Gothic Fairies (and bat wings as gothic fairy wings). They’re even seen as evil fairies. We in Faerie do not judge any amongst our own. We always try to understand their ways, although sometimes difficult. I can understand why you may think these things. But the Night Fairy Bat is not evil; perhaps just misunderstood. Including some who fly with the vampire bats, although that is something I will not go into detail with here, for their ways would truly be beyond your understanding. That can be left up to the lively mortal imagination. And yes, beware of them, especially their teeth, for they have not been trained in the ways of humans. They do not see your species as any different from that of any other animal. And they would be attracted to you the same way for the same reasons. This is not the kind of fairy you want to attract. Except strictly to observe them, perhaps. If you can. There are many kinds of bats, as you may know, ranging from insect eating to fruit eating, to the very gruesome vampire. A Night Fairy Bat usually prefers fruit, since insects and animals are mostly considered to be friends. But not all. A bat fairy would not necessarily eat an insect, mind you, but it is the excitement of the Hunt. And bats are excellent night hunters, using sonar and sounds to locate even the smallest food. And if a Night Fairy Bat flies with them, food is found far more easily. For we not only have taken on the skills of the animals we are with, but also add a few somewhat stunning skills of our own. Bats love us. And they also make excellent companions, especially once you learn to speak their “language.”
The favorite hang-out to hang in for the Night Fairy Bat is a cave or the rafters of an old building. Old ruins and churches are very popular. Colonies of bats hang in many places, including trees. But rarely do you see a bat fairy out in the open, except during The Hunt. They prefer the hidden secrecy and dark of an enclosure. So take care when you spot a bat at night. Especially a very large group. Wherever the dwells a colony in the hundreds or thousands, it is most probably that among them also dwells the Night Fairy Bat. Look carefully, for they are a trifle transparent. They are hard to spot since they fly with a group. It is their eyes that you will first see. But take care not to look at them directly. They do not like it. And so you will not know how they may react...
